White Oak Stain-matched Shelves

I was hired to fabricate and install three custom solid-wood shelves within a narrow wall opening that had been intentionally designed during a prior remodel, but never completed. The goal was to transform this unused space into a functional and visually integrated feature. A key requirement was a precise stain match to the adjacent ceiling beams. Using my Ready-to-Match (RTM) color-matching system from General Finishes, I was able to dial in the color for a seamless match. (See the video below for the process.) While fitting shelves into existing walls always presents challenges, the result is a clean, tailored installation that looks original to the home. The client loved the finished shelves and so did I.

Front view — This view shows how the shelves visually tie together the ceiling beams, hardwood flooring, and wall opening. The matched stain and integrated lighting help the shelves read as part of the original architecture rather than an added element.
